Yesterday I had a very interesting discussion with a client who wanted to know what to wear with a linen shirt. The question was simple, but very important: what trousers and footwear go best with such a shirt?
By its nature, a linen shirt is a relaxed garment. It has a natural elegance, but it's not a rigid, formal shirt. It is best worn in casual, smart casual, or even casual sport contexts, depending on the cut, color, and the rest of the outfit.
Therefore, when building an outfit around a linen shirt, it is important to maintain the same stylistic direction. If we choose a loose, breathable shirt with a natural texture, the trousers should also convey the same sense of comfort and relaxation.
My recommendation was a pair of linen trousers with a baggy cut, which offers freedom of movement and maintains the relaxed character of the outfit. For footwear, I chose a pair of textile sneakers, precisely to match not only the colors but also the textures of the worn pieces.
This is an important detail: we don't just match shades, but also textures. Linen, cotton, canvas, or light textile materials work very well together because they belong to the same visual and tactile area.
Since it was an outfit geared towards casual sport, I omitted the classic accessory called a belt. In such a combination, the absence of a belt can make the outfit appear more natural, modern, and less cluttered.
So, if you're wearing a linen shirt, think of the outfit in the same key: loose, natural, breathable. Loose linen trousers and a pair of textile sneakers can be a very good choice for a relaxed yet carefully constructed appearance.
